Montresor
Montresor is our trusty (or maybe not so trusty!) narrator. He has an apparent beef with Fortunato, saying that Fortunato has done him an injustice that begs for revenge. Though we never know what Fortunato did to Montresor, we assume that it was either so horrible, and thus justifies Montresor's brash revenge plot, or was not that big of a deal.
Montresor says that in order for revenge to be served the person who has done the injustice must know why they are the butt of revenge. At the end of the story, Fortunato takes away Montresor's satisfaction in the revenge by remaining quiet while Montresor continues to build a wall, trapping Fortunato.
